Last week was Anti-bullying week in school. The overall scheme was “Change starts with us” the School's Student Parliament offered a workshop on “Is it Bullying?” and tried to find possible ways on how we can be the change.

What is bullying?

According to StopBullying.gov, Bullying is:

Unwanted, aggressive behavior among school children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious lasting problems.

https://www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/index.html

Bullying behavior includes an imbalance of power, an intent to harm and repetition. There are 3 different types of bullying:

  • Verbal (Name-calling, threatening, teasing)
  • Social (leaving someone out, spreading rumors, embarrassing someone in public)
  • Physical (hitting, kicking, spitting)

Where does bullying happen?

Most bullying incidents happen in school during school hours. But it can also happen after school, in the playground or on the bus, travelling to and from school or on the internet (cyberbullying).

How can you, as a parent, find out if your child is being bullied?

She/he

  • does not want to go to school
  • has frequent headaches and stomachaches
  • changes friends/friendship groups
  • has problems to fall asleep
  • does not want to interact with the family
  • has an obsession or withdrawal from phone/internet
  • has physical marks

Jemima Small is funny and smart. She knows a lot of things. Like the fact that she's made of 206 bones, over 600 muscles and trillions of cells. What she doesn't know is how that can be true and yet she can still sometimes feel like nothing... Or how being made to join the school's "special" healthy lifestyle group - aka Fat Club - could feel any less special. But Jemima also knows that the biggest stars in the universe are the brightest. And maybe it's her time to shine...
