Below is a number of questions that are often asked by new families to Luxembourg and to our school. Please feel free to contact us directly should you have any more questions.

What is the structure of the school day?

Morning registration is at 8:30am for Primary and Secondary students.

Breaks and lunchtimes are staggered across the school. School ends at 3:15pm for all students. School buses depart at 3:30pm.

After-school activities generally take place from 3:30 - 4:30pm. After-School care for Reception to Year 6 students is available on a first-come-first served basis from 3:15 - 5:30pm.

Which year group will my child enter?

We place students in year groups based on their age before the 1st of September.

Can my child join during the academic year if we move to Luxembourg mid-year?

Yes, if we have spaces available we can accept students during the year. The exception to this being Year 10 and above. For Nursery classes, if we have space available, there may be an intake of students at the start of the term in January and April.

What are the maximum class sizes?

Classes are kept small at St George's, with a very positive teacher/student ratio. Average class size in Foundation (Nursery and Reception) is 20, Key Stage 1 and 2 we aim to have a maximum of 22 students in the class.

Tutor groups in Secondary are no larger than 22 students, although at I/GCSE and A-Level the numbers in subject specific classes can be substantially less.

Is the school inspected?

Yes. St George's is subject to regular inspections by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) - for a copy of the most recent report, click here. How do students get to school?

St George's currently operates five private bus routes for its students in Reception class and above. Details of the specified routes can be obtained from the Admissions Officer and current parents can view bus information via the Parent Portal. All buses have a radio link and a chaperone on board. Public buses #15, #20, and #25 have service to Hamm and the nearest stop is a 3-minute walk from our site. Secondary students are issued ID cards which can be used on public transport within Luxembourg on school days. The train station "Cents-Hamm" is also nearby the school. A number of students are also driven by their families or carpool to school using our "Kiss and Fly" facility.

Where do St George's families live?

The majority of our families live within a 15 to 20 minute drive from school. Some families do choose to live across the border and commute, as is common in Luxembourg. A more detailled overview of where our families reside can be obtained from the Admissions Officer.

How many nationalities are represented?

We currently have over 60 nationalities represented among the student body. Therefore, every class is a wonderful mixture of different cultures.

Do you have a school uniform?

St George's does not require students to wear a specific uniform. We do, however, adhere to a dress code policy. The school provides a Physical Education t-shirt and swimming hat for NEW Primary students and a PE kit for (tracksuit/shorts/polo shirt) for all Secondary students' sports lessons. We also have a red zipped fleece available for purchase at the Reception desk or online shop.

Does the school provide meals?

Yes. Students can either elect to eat a hot lunch provided by our school canteen, or can bring their own packed lunch from home. Canteen lunches are prepared freshly on site and must be ordered by parents in advance, at an extra charge. More information about school meals can be found on the Canteen section of our site. All students are expected to bring a snack and drink from home for their morning break. We ask that parents/students avoid all nut products in lunches and snacks.

Does my child need to speak English in order to enrol?

Students entering Nursery are not required to have English skills prior to starting.

Older Primary students are assessed on an individual basis to determine their needs and our ability to accommodate them academically.

Secondary students are required to have fluency in English, both spoken and written, in order to cope with the demands of our rigorous academic programme.

When will my child start learning French?

Students in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) have informal French lessons in their classrooms with songs, stories and rhymes. Students in Year 1 and above have more structured daily French lessons in the French classrooms.

Do you have extra-curricular activities?

St George's offers a wide variety of after-school activities to students in Year 1 upwards. Feel free to take a look at our extra-curricular activities section.

How do I know my child is ready to begin Nursery?

To join Nursery, students must be 3 years of age or above by the 1st of September and be fully toilet trained and independent in the bathroom. Many of the children beginning Nursery do not have English as their first language, English skills are acquired and extended during this year in Foundation. Nursery is a hive of activity and children are stimulated all day, without naptime. Therefore children should no longer require a nap in order to make it through the day.

Do you have a School Nurse/First Aider on site?

Yes. Health and safety is a top priority at St George's. A nurse is on duty at all times during school hours and many of the staff are also qualified first aiders.

Do I need a work permit in Luxembourg before I can apply for school places?

No. We can gladly accept applications before you have completed your working arrangements in Luxembourg.

Does the school have accident insurance?

The School carries civil liability insurance. Students are insured in case of damage caused by the school on school premises during school hours, on school trips and school extra-curricular activities.
